DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI (3/31/15) – The Dearborn Heights Department of Libraries has announced plans to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the building of the new John F. Kennedy Jr. Library located at 24602 Van Born Road.
An Open House will take place at the library on Saturday, April 25, 1:00pm-4:00pm, and will include children’s activities, database demonstrations, library tours, and free cake and popcorn. All Dearborn Heights residents are invited to this special celebration.
A similar celebration is scheduled to take place on April 18 at the Caroline Kennedy Library on Fenton St., in honor of their 10th Anniversary in their new building as well.
Originally opened in 1964, the old JFK Jr. Library facility was demolished and completely rebuilt in 2005 at a cost of $3.8 Million. At a time when the city questioned the ability to fund the construction of two city libraries (Caroline Kennedy Library was also rebuilt in the same time period), the Dearborn Heights Tax Increment Finance Authority stepped forward and committed to funding almost half the cost of the JFK Jr. Library, located within the TIFA District. Since then, the TIFA Board has contributed numerous additional improvements to the facility including equipment and renovation of the new parking lot to the East of the building.
